Value Your Time

The Importance Of Valuing Your Time

The decision to become a business owner is an important decision that requires constant investments of time, money, resources, etc.  In order to see a return on your investment, you must value your time while teaching others to do the same.  When you value your time, you are less likely to get invested in situations that amount to no return on investment.

“A dame that knows the ropes isn’t likely to get tied up.”  – Mae West

When you equate your time to money, you will be less reluctant to give it away.  In valuing your time, you will have to learn how to say no, you may end up turning away clients, or even terminating clients.  There is no amount of money worth losing sight of your vision.  As a business owner, it is imperative to identify your ideal clients, develop your terms, and stay true to your vision.  You did not become a business owner, to be miserable.  You must also recognize that you will not be the best fit for everyone and accept it.

“Never minimize who you are to try to accommodate other people.” – Crystal Smith

When speaking with a potential client, it is important to evaluate how they fit into your business.  There will be times when some clients are unable to separate how they treat an employee from how they should deal with an independent contractor.  This does not make them a bad client, it makes them a bad fit for your business.  A business owner does not have an employee mindset so there will be constant conflict.  When you take on the wrong client, it’s an injustice to the client as well as yourself because it will not work out and time is wasted.

In order to value your time, you must never set the precedence that your time isn’t valuable.

Ways You Demonstrate That Your Time Isn’t Valuable:

1.  You never say no.  You must say no in order to say yes to what really matters. Saying no is an important skill that successful people realize is necessary in order to accomplish goals.

2.  You are easily interrupted/distracted.  Do not allow people, emails, phones, etc. to take time away from the things you are currently invested in.

3.  You are always accessible.  If you always answer your phone or respond to emails immediately, you are setting the precedence that it should be expected. Keep your focus in order to accomplish goals.

4.  You don’t stick to time limits.  Have a set time for appointments and stick to it.  When you put a hard stop on activities, they are forced to adjust to fit the time allotted.

5.  You are passive when people are late.  By being passive regarding lateness, you are setting the precedence that it is acceptable.  Lateness is theft of time.

Your time is valuable and it is up to you to show others the value of your time.

You value your money and you don’t allow people to take it.  However, when you permit people to take your time, you are saying your time isn’t valuable.
